Banyana move top with emphatic win

Banyana Banyana thrashed a hapless Equatorial Guinea 7-1 in their second Total Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Group E on Wednesday evening.

Guinea were forced to make a big change seconds before the game, with goalkeeper Lucretia Abilla introduced off the bench in an injury-enforced scenario.

Banyana looked for an early lead and it almost arrived when Leandra Smeda was perfectly positioned to connect with a cross-field square, but was unable to find the back of the net.

The nervous start from Guinea saw them concede a penalty after a handball inside the box. Linda Motlhalo was given the honours and she made no mistake with a cool execution on 20 minutes.

The lead was increased after just two minutes when Mpumi Nyandeni was left unmarked inside the box to calmly send the ball past the posture of Abilla following a cross from Thembi Kgatlana.

The Guineans whose entry in the competition was marred with controversy, couldn’t get any sort of momentum on the game with Banyana running the show from all corners.

On the cusp of halftime, Motlhalo missed the opportunity to add her second after being prevented by good defending following a well-weighted low cross.

Equatorial Guinea were handed a lifeline through Elena who poked home a defensive mistake from Smeda a minute into halftime.

Banyana made a change at the start of the second half in the form of Refiloe Jane. The latter would reward the technical bench as she tapped home from unselfish play by Kgatlana.
