Barcelona top global sports salaries

Lionel Messi’s latest bumper deal for FC Barcelona has seen the LaLiga club create sporting history according to the latest Global Sports Salary Survey.

The LaLiga champions have become the first team in any sport with an average wage per player of £10.4m per year.

The Catalan giants will pay their first team squad an average of £200,000 per week before bonuses, according to the latest Global Sports Salary Survey, which has showcased the incredible inflation of sporting salaries worldwide.

This season Barca will pay its 23-man squad an average of £10.45m, before bonuses.

Much of that is down to signing captain Messi to a new deal that pays him in excess of £50m a year.

However, the additions of Phillippe Coutinho, Arthur, Malcom and Arturo Vidal have massively contributed to the exorbitant figures.

Their average weekly salary has also tipped just over the £200,000 mark weekly, at £201,043.

European champions Real Madrid, whose average salaries have increased to £8.1m per year despite the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo for Juventus provides the number two on the list.

While last year’s biggest payers, NBA franchise Oklahoma City Thunder, are now third on £7.85m per year, with the top five rounded out by two of their rivals, the Golden State Warriors and Washington Wizards.
