Baxter left to negotiate Bartlett's release

SAFA have left it to Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter to sort out his own technical team for the all-important 2019 AFCON qualifier against Libya in three weeks’ time.

Bafana face a stern test of having to acquire at least a point when they take on the Medditerranean Knights in Tunisia in their final Group E clash on March 24, with Baxter still in need of a new assistant coach.

The British tactician lost Shaun Bartlett to Kaizer Chiefs in December, when the former national team striker had been snapped up by the Soweto giants to deputise Ernst Miiddendorp.

During a media briefing last month, the senior national team boss declared his hope of retaining the 46-year-old on an interim basis so as to not disrupt the previous structure for the high-stakes fixture, but this was of course in the hands of Chiefs.

After gaining the PSL’s approval to have several fixtures shifted to aid Bafana’s preparations, the association are now waiting on Baxter to negotiate the release of his preferred candidate.

“He’s still busy dealing with that [issue of getting Bartlett from Chiefs]. It’s his choice and the final decision lies with him,” acting SAFA CEO Paul told KickOff.com.

“I’m still waiting to hear from him what his final decision is, but hopefully he’ll have an answer for you when he addresses you next week.”

The Bafana squad will be announced on Monday March 11, before they are set to assemble and depart for Tunisia on March 16, with Amakhosi set to face SuperSport United on March 15.
