Benni: We weren't at our best

Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy insists Mamelodi Sundowns were deserved winners in their Absa Premiership encounter at Loftus Versfeld.

The Citizens remain in fourth spot in the standings after losing 3-2 to Pitso Mosimane’s troops, however McCarthy felt some of the players did give the same effort as they have in previous matches.

“I think the deserved team won here today. It wasn’t our great game since I’ve been here. I think a lot of things could have come into play,” McCarthy told SuperSport TV.

“Nerves, too many of my players were not in the game. They’ve been giving me everything in every single game, these are the games where you expect the performances naturally to rise but maybe this game was one game too much to ask for.

“We made it difficult for Sundowns but we weren’t at our best. So I think they deserve to get this one and we’ll have another opportunity next week Tuesday to play the same team. I think in Cape Town things will be a little different, but [today] not one of our best games.

“I’m happy for Kermit [Erasmus], he came in and scored a wonder goal. For me that’s gotta be a goal of the season so far you know. But well done to Sundowns, they wanted it more than us.”

The former Bafana Bafana striker explained what he told his team during halftime when they were only trailing by one goal.

“I told them to be calm a little bit because everyone was just anxious. We were second in every ball. We need to put our feet on the ball. We need to put it down and play like we can play because inasmuch as Sundowns pressed us we could get through the press but I just thought too many players were not at their best today. And in these sorts of games, you play Chiefs, Pirates, Sundowns, Wits, SuperSport, you can’t have two or more players not being in the game because the opponent is extremely competitive. They require 11 players to be focused and ready to go to war. But unfortunately we didn’t have too many players who were up for it.
