Celtic drop points at home to Arrows

Steve Komphela enjoyed an ambivalent return to his former hunting ground as his Golden Arrows side were held 1-1 by Bloemfontein Celtic in Bloemfontein on Saturday.

Celtic move from seventh position on the PSL standings to fifth, while Arrows remain in 10th position.

Arrows began the brighter of the two sides and were looking to exploit the width of the field by regularly playing diagonal balls in order to stretch the Celtic defence.

The match was played in front of an almost empty stadium due to Siwelele fans boycotting the game in protest. With temperatures above 35 degrees celsius, players were allowed to have water breaks at the midway point of each half.

The first good chance of the game came to Arrows in the eighth minute after good work down the left flank by Divine Lunga, who cut the ball back for Siboniso Conco, but the winger could only hit a tame effort straight at the goalkeeper.

Both sides were playing fluid football and passing the ball around nicely. Arrows goalkeeper Nkosingiphile Gumede was guilty of the spilling a routine catch in the 15th minute, which luckily for him Phunya Sele Sele could not capitalise on.

Five minutes before half-time, Seth Parusnath found space down the left wing and curled the ball in to the penalty area with the outside of his foot but Knox Mutizwa just failed to make a connection as he lunged for the ball.

Abafana Bes’Thende will feel they should have had something more to show for their efforts going in to half-time after having the better of the chances.

They were punished for their wastefulness on the stroke of half-time when Phunya Sele Sele took the lead against the run of play. Celtic winger Kabelo Dlamini played a lovely one-two with Lucky Baloyi before slotting the ball through the defender’s legs and in to the far corner of the net.
