Chiefs Middendorp era off to positive start

Kaizer Chiefs edged SuperSport United 1-0 in an Absa Premiership battle in Nelspruit with a second half strike from George Maluleka.

Chiefs and SuperSport made a host of changes to their respective starting line-ups after encountering losses in their last encounters.

The main surprise was on the Chiefs end, with Itumeleng Khune replaced by Virgil Vries, and United re-called Morgan Gould and Onismor Bhasera to their defence.

Colombian Leonardo Castro missed a good chance to put Chiefs in front when Khama Billiat laid a perfect ball in his path after bringing down a long ball from the centre of attack.

Billiat was the passing instigator again as he played in Lebohang Manyama to run behind the defence and force Ronwen Williams to pluck his shot away for a corner.

A cross from the left following Godfrey Walusimbi’s overlapping run almost picked out Manyama, but a timeous intervention from Manyama stopped the ball from reaching the Alexandra-born.

SuperSport’s first opening after surviving the earlier dominance from Chiefs, this after Evans Rusike found space on the inside the box to get a snap shot away but Vries narrowed the angle for the save.

Chiefs were close to the breakthrough once again this time Billiat was on the end of a through ball on the byline but a strong challenge from Grant Kekana stopped him from taking flight.

Substitutions on either end happened at the start of the second half, with Thuso Phala on for United and Kabelo Mahlasela on for the hosts.
