Citizens add to Maritzburg's woes

Cape Town City added to Maritzburg United’s woes in the Absa Premiership with a 3-2 victory at Athlone Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Benni McCarthy made three changes in Taariq Fielies, Gift Links and Surprise Ralani, while Eric Tinkler was happy to field the same side that did battle in their last encounter.

United were fortunate not to succumb to an early goal following a left-footed strike from inside the box by Kermit Erasmus.

Eight minutes later though, Thamsanqa Mkhize squeezed through the defence to head home Links’s corner.

The basement dwellers suffered further frustration after Brian Onyango couldn’t continue and was replaced by Nazeer Allie on 25 minutes.

Neither side managed to penetrate the respective 18-yard areas heading to halftime, but City seemed dangerous every time possession found their tail.

In the second half, McCarthy’s men closed in on a second when Craig Martin robbed Mxolisi Kunene of possession to only scuff the final effort on 54 minutes, while Erasmus joined the act later on when he forced Richard Ofori into some save with a close-range header.

The Team of Choice were level after Kunene caught Mkhize for pace to smash home a left-footed shot past Peter Leeuwenburgh on 61 minutes.

However, the Citizens weren’t level for too long when Links opened up from the left side to rifle home the second on 72 minutes.
