City veteran ever-ready for Bafana

Polokwane City stalwart Jabulani Maluleke is not too fazed by his Bafana Bafana shortcomings but says he will always be ready if the opportunity ever does arise.

Maluleke is a true veteran of the Premier Soccer League, having played at the highest level since his arrival at Black Leopards in the 2005/06 Castle Premiership (now sponsored by Absa) campaign.

The 36-year-old has since enjoyed spells at SuperSport United, where he lifted the Absa Premiership trophy in 2009/10 as well as the Nedbank Cup in 2012, and now with Rise and Shine.

He has amassed 30 goals and over 50 assists in as many as 300 club appearances, proving his consistency over the past 13 seasons, before recently picking up the Absa Player of the Month award for October.

However, the one feather missing from Maluleke’s cap is that elusive international debut for the South African national team, which he insists is no big deal – but should the call-up come at some stage, he would be more than ready.

“I’ve been getting this question more and more frequently but, for me, I’ve been in the national team setup in 2008 and I just didn’t get an opportunity to play,” said Maluleke.

“But I have been in the setup for long and all I can say is that if anything comes I’ll be ready for it. But I’ll be happy for the guys if they can qualify and be in the African Cup of Nations [next year].”

Bafana are one victory away from booking their spot in Cameroon next year, with their penultimate Group E qualification fixture against Nigeria taking place this Saturday at FNB Stadium.
