CR7 loses ground in Golden Shoe race

Cristiano Ronaldo lost further ground in the race for the European Golden Shoe this season as Lionel Messi and two prolific Serie A strikers maintained their recent form.

Ronaldo, 34, was an unused substitute in Juventus’ 4-1 win over Udinese last Friday as manager Massimiliano Allegri opted to rest the club-record signing.

With the UEFA Champions League Last-16 tie with Atletico Madrid in mind, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner has now seen Fabio Quagliarella and Krzysztof Piatek push further ahead of him in the Serie A scoring charts too.

The 36-year-old Quagliarella netted in the 2-1 defeat to Atalanta to move to the summit of the charts with 20 goals, while Milan ace Piatek has moved level with Ronaldo on 19 albeit with a superior record of averaging a goal every 109 minutes, compared to Ronaldo’s 118 minutes in the league.

France wonderkid Kylian Mbappe will only be in action on Tuesday evening against relegation-threatened Dijon as he looks to cut the lead of FC Barcelona talisman, Messi – who pushed further ahead.

Messi scored and assisted in their 3-1 win over Rayo Vallecano pushing him two goals ahead of the 20-year-old sensation.
