Owen Da Gama is facing a problem he discovered when he took over at the beginning of the season at Highlands Park – the defence.

After defeat to Golden Arrows last Saturday, the Lions of the North coach expressed frustration over poor defending by his players and revealed they knew about these challenges.

“In the beginning of the season we knew about these challenges hence we’ve been trying different players to get the right back four,” he said.

“We need to brush it off as soon as possible. Some players need more time to understand what we need from them.”

On the debut of Enocent Mkhabela, Da Gama also revisited their defensive problems.

“It was not a good debut. It also shows the problem we have at the back, we made schoolboy errors and we got punished,” he said. “We were educated on the day, Steve [Komphela] did his homework on us.”

Nevertheless, the former Orlando Pirates coach was positive about the way the team tried to come back and believes in the next game they will be better.

“We will try and sort this out soon, I won’t punish them,” Da Gama added. “I just need to keep on reminding them that we need to stay focused and keep up the consistency.”
