Dino on defensive Nigeria and small SA crowds

Bafana Bafana striker Dino Ndlovu says Nigeria’s deployment of three centre-backs indicated they came to South Africa looking for a draw.

Baxter – Libya will be ‘knife to the throat’ game

The sides played to a 1-1 stalemate at FNB Stadium on Saturday, a result which saw the visitors book their spot at the 2019 African Nations Cup in Cameroon with a game to spare.

Bafana will have to avoid defeat in their final AFCON qualifier away to Libya in March – which will likely be contested in Tunisia – to join the Super Eagles at the continental showpiece.

“I think we could’ve done a little bit more. We could’ve upped it a notch but there’s a lot of factors that played a role in us not getting the three points we wanted,” Ndovu said.

“You could see when the game started, I think we were all over them and they came for a draw – that is why they played three centre-backs. All in all they played five defenders, so that showed they gave us too much respect.

“All in all we gave them that respect to really attack them. But I think the guys did very well and I’m proud of the boys. It’s not over until the next game against Libya.”
