Dortmund sink rivals Gladbach

Borussia Dortmund strengthened their grip on top spot in the Bundesliga after eclipsing Borussia Monchengladbach 2-1 on Friday evening.

In a top-of-the-table clash, the stakes were high for both Dortmund and Monchengladbach, especially with the latter looking to cut the gap on the runaway leaders.

Dortmund showed the earlier promise after Acham Hakimi blasted wide from the right side following a loose ball inside the box on 10 minutes.

Monchengladbach struggled to get out of the starting blocks, with Dortmund having the advantage on all fronts in the opening sector.

A right-footed effort from the centre of the box by Marco Reus presented Dortmund its second opportunity following a through pass from Paco Alcacer, but it was saved on 20 minutes.

Three minutes later, Reus returned the favour to Alcacer as he delivered a telling ball to the former FC Barcelona man to add to his scoring tally, but he missed from close range.

It was left to Axel Witsel to try and find the breakthrough, but he also came unstuck with a wayward strike inside the half and hour mark after a pass by Hakimi.

Dortmund were forced to make a substitution after Alcacer sustained an injury on 34 minutes. He was replaced by Mario Gotze.

It seemed to do little to affect Dortmund’s chances to the breakthrough after Witsel steered a left-footed shot wide on 36 minutes.
