Downs CAFCL halfway mark report

Halfway through Mamelodi Sundowns’ CAF Champions League group campaign, KickOff.com looks at how Pitso Mosimane’s men have improved from last year’s round robin phase.

Home

The 2016 champions can be happy with the way they have performed on home soil this season. They’ve collected maximum points in their two home matches thus far, which is one more point than they managed in their backyard throughout the round robin phase last year. Sundowns were not convincing at home last season, but they’ve shown a lot of hunger this time round and they are making sure that teams do not do as they please at Lucas Moripe Stadium. They’ve got one more match at home against Nigeria side Lobi Stars and should feel confident that they can overcome the side. What Mosimane will be worried about, however, is that they are yet to keep a clean sheet at home.

Away

Sundowns have played just one match away from home and it came with a wake up from Lobi Stars, who are the weakest side in the group. Stars came from a goal down to record a 2-1 victory over the Absa Premiership champions, but Sundowns now have to pull up their socks to get some points in their remaining two matches away from home. Next on their schedule is a tough one against an ASEC Mimosas side that is yet to concede a goal on home soil, so the likes of Gaston Sirino, Emiliano Tade and Themba Zwane will need to be on top form to find a chink in the opposition armour.

– Themba Zwane

Zwane is enjoying a great run of form in the group stages, scoring three goals – a brace in a match winning performance against Wydad Casablanca and another in win over ASEC Mimosas. He also set up Emiliano Tade for a goal on debut against ASEC.
