Fadlu explains Pirates move

Orlando Pirates assistant coach Fadlu Davids has opened up on his shock move to the Soweto giants, while explaining what the selling point was for him to get on board.

Pirates appointment of Davids as a second assistant to head coach Milutin Sredojevic and first assistant Rhulani Mokwena a fortnight ago caught many off guard, including the former Maritzburg United mentor himself.

Davids was relieved of his duties at the Team of Choice shortly before Christmas, after the club had fallen to the foot of the Absa Premiership table following a fifth defeat of the season to Baroka.

Though Maritzburg were undoubtedly struggling, many perceived the club’s decision to sack the 37-year-old tactician, who had last season led them to historic heights, as harsh and premature.

However, Davids quickly dusted himself off and wasted no time in finding himself a new job when The Buccaneers came knocking, albeit much to his surprise.

“The move came about very quickly, I got one call and flew down to meet the chairman [Irvin Khoza] on the one day and the next I was introduced to the [existing] coaches,” explained Davids on Pirates TV.

“I didn’t have to think twice about when the opportunity came for me to join such a club with a huge fan-base, and not only a club but an institution.
