Golden Shoe: Mbappe closes in on Messi

France wonderkid Kylian Mbappe now only trails Lionel Messi by one goal in the race for the European Golden Shoe after his incredible Ligue 1 form continued this weekend – while Cristiano Ronaldo drew another blank.

After starting last weekend with a three-goal lead over the Paris Saint-Germain forward, Messi failed to score in the Clasico win over Real Madrid in LaLiga.

This allowed Mbappe to close in on the FC Barcelona captain, as he netted a brace in their victory over Caen.

The 20-year-old has now scored a staggering 24 goals in 21 league games this season – seven more than the nearest competitor in the division, which is his teammate Edinson Cavani with 17.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo failed to score for the second consecutive week and looked below par during his side’s victory over title-rivals Napoli on Sunday, which allowed 36-year-old Fabio Quagliarella equal his tally at the summit of the Serie A scoring charts with 19 strikes for the season.

The Sampdoria veteran has achieved the tally with one game less than the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.

Golden Shoe top-five:

1. Messi (25 goals, 50pts) – FC Barcelona
