I don't need CR7 Serie A challenge – Messi

FC Barcelona captain Lionel Messi has responded ‘challenge’ Juventus superstar Cristiano Ronaldo set him over potentially reestablishing their rivalry in Serie A.

Messi, 31, picked up a record fifth European Golden Shoe for his exploits during the 2017/18 season but missed out on a podium finish for the 2018 Ballon d’Or.

Ronaldo, who finished as runner-up to former teammate Luka Modric, departed LaLiga in the off-season as Real Madrid’s club-record goalscorer, citing a new challenge in Italy.

And shortly after his blistering start in Serie A, he laid out the gauntlet to his fellow five-time winner of the Golden Ball.

“I played in England, Spain, Italy, Portugal, in the national team, while he is still in Spain. Maybe he needs me more,” Ronaldo said.

“For me, life is a challenge, I like it and I like to make people happy. I would like him to come to Italy one day. Like me, accept the challenge.”

However, Messi has not entertained the suggestion.

“Accepting Ronaldo’s challenge to join Italian football? I don’t need any change,” the Barcelona talisman said to Marca.

“I’m at the best team in the world. My challenges are renewed year after year. I do not need to change teams or leagues to set new goals.
