'It's not about beautiful football'

Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene says they worry more about getting the results in the CAF Champions League, rather than playing good football.

Sundowns started their Group A campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Nigerian club Lobi Stars away from home last week and next host Wydad Casablanca at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.

The experienced Mweene says they have to be smart when competing in the group stages, as it is all about results, especially away from home where conditions are not always conducive for enterprising football.

“You have to be smart, especially when you are in the group stages. In the group you can be playing good football and at the end of the day you lose or you draw. You just have to collect maximum points,” Mweene said.

“Beautiful football you will see it in the quarterfinals, semi-finals. In the group stages there’s no good football, that’s what I can say. That’s my experience. You work more harder than playing football, so for us it’s about collecting points so that we can move out of the group stages and then beautiful football will come in the quarterfinal and semi-final and the final.”

As former champions, Sundowns are always targeted by teams who are determined to beat them, so they need to work even harder to get their victories in the competition.

“It is very difficult and you have to always work hard, because to be on top there is not easy,” Mweene stated.
