'It's up to me to fill Ronaldo's boots'

Karim Benzema admits the onus is on him to fill the boots of Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid and revealed how much goals he’d like to score this season.

Benzema, 30, is currently the most experienced forward at the club as he closes in on a decade at the European champions.

With a record of 202 goals and 116 assists in 430 games since his arrival from Lyon in 2009, the Frenchmen has often been lauded for his unselfishness when providing the perfect foil for club-record soccer Ronaldo during his time at the club.

However, with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner having departed for Juventus in July, Benzema whose best haul for Madrid was 32 goals in 2011/12, said he needs to take more responsibility.

“When I look back, I look at what I’ve done at Real Madrid, with a lot of sacrifices, and I’m happy,” he told Real Madrid TV.

“The important thing is to always be motivated. Before we had Cristiano and now we don’t not, so it’s my turn and I’m ready for that.

“I’ll try to score a lot of goals, as I want to score in every game. I’m not going to put a number on my head, but I like to score and give assists.

“But thirty-five goals? I like that number.”

Madrid will make the trip to Eibar in La Liga on Saturday before a return to Champions League action three days later away to AS Roma.
