Maboe: I have freedom to express myself

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Lebohang Maboe says he appreciates the freedom he is given by coach Pitso Mosimane to express himself on the pitch, which is helping improve his game.

Maboe has established himself as a regular at Sundowns and is fast becoming a key component in Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying squad.

In previous interviews Mosimane has spoken about how he wants to see Maboe playing with a lot more confidence – taking players on and getting into good scoring positions – and the former Maritzburg United man is no doubt listening to what his coach is saying.

“It’s the confidence that the coach gives me. He tells me to go out there and express myself and that’s what I do; I just go out there and express myself and I do whatever it is I want to do with the ball. So I’d say it’s the confidence that the coach gives me,” Maboe said.

The mission now for Maboe is to keep his place in the national team, especially with Bafana in a good position to qualify for the Cup of Nations, set to be played in Cameroon.

“I just have to be consistent and keep doing what I have been doing and hopefully I will keep my place in the national team. I’d like to make the team that will be in the AFCON next year.”

Maboe is likely to start in midfield for Bafana when they take on Group E leaders Nigeria at FNB Stadium on Saturday (15h00). It’s a game Bafana cannot afford to lose.
