McCarthy coy over Erasmus talk

Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy gave little away when quizzed about Kermit Erasmus’ possible signing for the Cape club, but admits he is a fan of the striker.

KickOff.com on Monday broke the news that Erasmus was seen in the Mother City, as the troubled 28-year-old seeks greener pastures having made just a single substitute appearance all season for Portuguese top-flight club Vitoria Setubal, following less-than-impressive stints in Sweden and France.

When quizzed about the former Orlando Pirates forward joining the Citizens, McCarthy was tight-lipped.

“I’d sign him in a heartbeat, but isn’t he going to [points his thumb and index finger, referring to Mamelodi Sundowns]?” he told journalists.

“You know me, I would tell you. You’ll have to put a few thousands in my pocket to give me the scoop … but if I knew, I would say. Unless John knows something, and is jumping over my head, making signings without me knowing about it, then yes, and thank you for that!”

Erasmus was seen at Athlone Stadium on Tuesday evening as City drew 1-1 with Chippa United, with McCarthy flippant in acknowledging his presence or possible signing.

“Kermit was here? Me, I was there [on the pitch], I don’t see what goes on in the background. But you said you saw me with him at the airport yesterday and that I picked him up?” he said in a surprised tone, yet without denying it.

“If I need to sign him up, I’d jump on a plane and fetch him myself from Setubal, but unfortunately, I don’t know.”
