Memela stitched but still a doubt

Orlando Pirates team doctor Ezekiel Matebula has revealed the extent of midfielder Luvuyo Memela’s injury suffered against Mamelodi Sundowns.

Memela was stretchered off immediately after colliding with Sundowns skipper Hlompho Kekana, who has since issued a public apology for his challenge, at the Orlando Stadium on Monday.

The 31-year-old has had terrible fortune with injuries this season, having missed the first seven months of the campaign through a knee injury before returning in February.

Having managed two goals and an assist in his eight games seven games recently, Amigo is now at risk of missing his side’s next league assignment away to Bidvest Wits this weekend. 

“Luvuyo suffered a deep laceration to the right anterior thigh,” Dr Matebula told Pirates’ website. 

“The laceration was 4cm by 2.5cm deep extending to the fascia and was bleeding profusely [on Monday night].

“The wound was cleaned and sutured on the inside and the skin closure done with four nylon stitches.

“Anti-tetanus toxoid vaccine and antibiotics were also given as precaution.”
