Micho wants Champs League foundation

Orlando Pirates coach Milutin Sredojevic has stressed the importance of gaining steam ahead of their final two CAF Champions League group stage clashes next month.

Pirates’ chances of advancing to the next round of the premier continental championship are currently under threat as they occupy third spot in Group B, behind leaders Esperance and Horoya.

However, their fate remains in their own hands with fixtures against bottom-placed FC Platinum at home on March 9, preceded by a trip to Horoya a week later, which might well decide who advances to the quarterfinals.

Before then, however, The Buccaneers have an Absa Premiership tie away to Golden Arrows this Saturday, and Sredojevic is hoping they can follow their recent 4-1 rout of AmaZulu with another victory to place them on good ground ahead of FC Platinum’s visit to Orlando Stadium.

“Subconsciously we also want to lift the level of our performances because we have tough two matches in the Champions’ League,” said Micho.

“At home to FC Platinum we need to win, and we need to go away to Conakry and get at least a draw to guarantee us to go through [to the knockout stages].

“But for that to happen, we need to lay a good foundation through the local matches and that will set us up to springboard towards the higher requirements of the Champions League.”
