Middendorp: Players still need time

Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp believes his side still need to improve before they tick the way he feels they can but says the likes of Khama Billiat and Leonardo Castro need time.

Chiefs have undergone a rollercoaster season thus far under two different managers and find themselves some way off the pace in comparison to main rivals Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates.

Though Middendorp has brought change since the departure of a tactically inept Giovanni Solinas, the German tactician has admitted he still needs to build up a formidable side over time, much in the way Pitso Mosimane explained of Sundowns’ rise.

“I found one quote from our valued colleague Pitso [Mosimane], he said it took him three years to find the Khama Billiat, Keagan Dolly [and Leonardo Castro combination],” explained Middendorp.

“I hope it will not take that long for us [to find the right combinations]. I think we can do a bit better, but a lot of players were brought into Chiefs in the beginning of the season.

“It’s not only Khama or Leonardo, who came in four or five months earlier; it’s Dax [Andrianarimanana], [Siphelele] Ntshangase and some other players that have also been lost in the near past.”

Middendorp has thus appealed for patience as many players who are not used to the pressures of playing for a club like Amakhosi adjust and fin their feet.

“Let’s take this into consideration a little bit, that everybody in the second year will probably do better and be happier with the pressure – it is like this,” he added.
