Mothiba talks up Tau partnership

Bafana Bafana forwards Lebogang Mothiba and Percy Tau are looking to grow in their partnership which could play a crucial role in spearheading the team past Nigeria this weekend.

It has been a while since the national team boasted a European-based duo up front, with Mothiba and Tau earning international experience at their respective clubs in France and Belgium.

Their combination proved fruitful when they first partnered up front in Bafana’s 6-0 drubbing of Seychelles at the FNB Stadium last month, with the two carving our numerous chances after nifty exchanges of passes in and around the box.

Many will be looking to the pair this weekend when South Africa take on The Super Eagles in their penultimate 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, and the Strasbourg star is feeling the growing connection.

“I like playing with Percy because he’s very quick and very skilful. I like having him around me because I can just keep the ball and lay it off to him and he can dribble,” said Mothiba.

“I like playing with him and our communication is very good. We speak well and even at training we laugh together and speak, so I like playing with him.”

Meanwhile, the burly 22-year-old feels the absence of Nigeria’s top scorer Odion Ighalo could be advantageous for Bafana but is wary of their wealth of talent and experience that can replace the injured striker.

“It’s very important for us because we know their best striker is injured, but that is no reason for us to feel as if everything is fine and we can relax,” he noted.

“Because they have other strikers, and you know Nigeria have good strikers with strong physiques and pace, so we just have to prepare thoroughly and do well in our preparations therefor.”
