Mzimela can replace Akpeyi – Larsen

Chippa United head coach Clinton Larsen says even though he is not happy to lose a goalkeeper of Daniel Akpeyi’s quality, he has confidence in Mbongeni Mzimela.

Nigerian international Akpeyi has signed for Kaizer Chiefs, leaving 33-year-old Chiefs development product Mzimela as the new number one at the Chilli Boys.

Mzimela walked away with the man of the match award in last Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Baroka FC in Polokwane.

“No, Daniel is a good player you know, he is an international. So any team who loses a player like that will miss a good player so we wish him the best in his new environment, with his new team,” Larsen tells KickOff.com.

“And as you could see [on Sunday], Mzimela got man of the match. So he’s proven that he’s got what it takes to step up now and make sure that Daniel’s absence is not sorely missed as we thought it could be.

“We’ve got confidence in Mzimela but yes, Daniel is a quality keeper. These are decisions clubs make all over the world, players’ contracts coming to an end, and you’ve got to make some financial decisions for the betterment of the club and for the player.

“So ja, it was a win-win for the club and the player. We discussed it as management and technical team so it was a collective decision from the club.”
