Nomvethe at the end or cracking on?

AmaZulu boss Lunga Sokhela says they have yet to touch base with Siyabonga Nomvethe regarding his imminent retirement.

Usuthu in September on Twitter announced that Nomvethe, who has scored twice in four league games this season, will hang up his boots when his contract expires at the end of December.

With some reports indicating ‘Bhele’ will see out the rest of the campaign, it is unclear if the 41-year-old will continue to feature for Cavin Johnson’s side in the new year.

Sokhela says as a club they haven’t yet revisited the matter with the former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana dangerman despite him recently showing signs that he is far from finished.

“Ja look, to be honest it’s not something we have revisited,” Sokhela says.

“Uh, the last decision he made was to retire in December. We haven’t engaged him further on the matter. Obviously there’s been a lot of games and we’ve been quite busy, so there hasn’t been any engagement outside ukuthi uyahamba ngo December (whether or not he is leaving in December) you see. Uhhmm, so that’s basically the official statement I can make on this matter.”

Usuthu will close out 2018 with a derby against Golden Arrows at King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday (15h30).

Bhele – the PSL’s all-time top scorer with 123 goals – has enjoyed an illustrious 21-year career, turning out for the likes of Soweto giants Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, Italian trio Udinese, Salernitana and Empoli, Sweden’s Djurgardens and Danish side Aalborg.
