Onyango humbled to be recognised

Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango says he is humbled to be short-listed again for the CAF African Player of the Year award this year.

Onyango has been nominatted for the top CAF award for third time in a row.
The Ugandan international has been short-listed with the likes of Sadio Mane, Pierre-Emerick Aumabeyang and reigning champion Mohammed Salah for the gong.

“It’s fantastic to be nominated for a third time in a row,” said Onyango, who missed his club’s trip to Egypt for the CAF Champions League match against Al-Ahli Benghazi on Sunday night due to a knee injury.

“It shows that I have done good job with my team and the national team,” he added.

Onyango remains hopeful that his nomination for the CAF Player of the Year award will motivate other players on the continent to do well for their respective clubs and national teams.

“It keeps me motivated as a player and hope other players get motivated as well to be selected amongst the best players in the continent.”

“It shows that if you do well you get recognition. Yes I haven’t won it but to be amongst the continent’s best is massive for me,” he added.

Onyango is currently nursing a knee injury sustained during league game against Supersport United recently is expected to be out of action for six to eight weeks.
