Radebe trumpets Bafana opportunity

Bafana Bafana legend Lucas Radebe feels Stuart Baxter’s men have a chance to restore pride in the national team in their penultimate African Nations Cup qualifier against Nigeria.

South Africa can book their spot at Cameroon 2019 with a victory over the three-time African champions at FNB Stadium on Saturday (15h00).

Bafana, who failed to qualify for the last AFCON and the 2018 World Cup, beat the Super Eagles for the first time in a competitive fixture in the reverse tie in Uyo in June 2017.

The 2-0 win was also Baxter’s first match on his return to the Bafana fold following the sacking of Ephraim Mashaba.

The West Africans, however, responded strongly to the shock defeat as they currently find themselves a point clear of Bafana at the Group E summit.

Nigeria have given the hosts plenty of heartache over the years, winning seven, drawing four and only losing twice (other loss was in the friendly Nelson Mandela Challenge 13 years ago) in previous meetings.

The Super Eagles notably beat Bafana 2-0 in the 2000 AFCON semi-finals in Lagos, while they thrashed them 4-0 in the group stages of the 2004 AFCON in Tunisia.

Radebe, who helped South Africa win the 1996 AFCON, believes Bafana have a great opportunity ahead.

“You know we beat, is it twice? We beat them once away, 2-0 in the first leg,” said Radebe, who earned 70 caps and scored twice for Bafana.
