Radja slams 'pathetic' Martinez excuses

Inter midfielder Radja Nainggolan has opened up about his Belgium national team exile and the ‘pathetic excuses’ manager Roberto Martinez gave him before his 2018 FIFA World Cup snub for the number one ranked team in world football.

Nainggolan, 30, was infamously omitted for the third-placed finishers of Russia 2018, with Martinez citing the powerful midfielder not being the right fit for his tactical gameplan at the global showpiece.

Despite being displaying dominant performances for AS Roma in Serie A and in the UEFA Champions League, the more youthful dup Leander Dendoncker and Youri Tielemans were surprisingly selected ahead of the eccentric Nerazzurri star.

“I was really, really disappointed with the fact that I’d played a great European Championship and then I was discarded for nothing,” he told ESPN FC.

“I see things differently: in Belgium, there were players who were not playing at club level and they were getting called up.

“I was playing 50 games and was still being left out. I was never demanding that I had to play, I just deserved to be there in place of some other players.

“Then there were the excuses, but they were all pathetic. Why was I playing 50 games for Roma if I was leading the same life [I was being criticised for]? I think it’s wrong when people say things without speaking to me first.

“You’ve got to say things to my face, we can have a talk and then we shake hands and you don’t call me up again but I’ve got more respect for you than somebody who doesn’t do that.”

Nainggolanย who joined Inter in the off-season for a reported โ‚ฌ38 million deal went on to reveal that he has no intention of ever returning to the Red Devils, even if Martinez was to vacate his role as the nations head coach.
