Witbank Spurs coach Shakes Mashaba has explained why he did not sign former Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs striker Bongani Ndulula.
Mashaba, who worked with Ndulula at both under-23 and Bafana Bafana level, says the striker gave him a call recently.Mashaba, however, told Ndulula that Spurs are focused on trying to avoid relegation in the National First Division, so they could only look at bringing him in next season.
Ndulula has not had any luck in trying to find a team for the last two years. The 29-year-old has been without a club since he was released by Chippa United in January 2017.
“Guess what? Last week I was talking to Ndulula. He gave me a call and I was asking people ‘where does Ndulula get my phone number?’ Somebody says ‘we are living in modern times now, people just Google and they get your name and number and they call you’.
“I spoke to him and he wanted to come to us, but most unfortunately I told him let’s finish off this problem that we are sitting with [to avoid relegation]. It’s good to bring in new players, but we’ve got to be careful.
“We are facing this mammoth task of relegation. Do we want to bring in new players, which will be the same as starting from scratch? Do you go on with the old players you have, maybe they are passionate to move away from that position?”
Spurs are in 15th place on the First Division standings, just a point ahead of bottom-placed side Real Kings.
