'Shoes' relishing potential first Derby

Orlando Pirates utility player Asavela Mbekile is relishing the prospect of participating in his first Soweto Derby between the two South African giants.

Not to be mistaken for his first ever Soweto Derby though, as Mbekile previously donned the colours of Moroka Swallows in the ‘original Soweto Derby’ against The Buccaneers during his brief spell with Maswaiswai in 2013/14.

Nonetheless, the modern derby is undoubtedly much more significant with the two sides boasting the largest support base in the country and proven to be the only fixture to fill up FNB stadium, which not even Bafana Bafana is capable of.

The 32-year-old recently made his club debut in the Telkom Knockout quarterfinal victory over AmaZulu earlier this month and has not looked back since, starting both subsequent league games against Polokwane City and his former side Mamelodi Sundowns.

It is with this in consideration that he is relishing possibly featuring in his first clash between Pirates and Chiefs, who face off in the Telkom Knockout semi-final at a sold-out Moses Mabhida Stadium this Saturday.

“It could be [my Derby debut]. I think everyone wants to play that game, and we all watch that game. When we played Chiefs [in the league] and won, it was very exciting even though we were in the stands,” Mbekile told KickOff.com.

“It was like we were on the field because we were cheering just as hard as the guys who were playing, so it was quite a nice feeling.”
