Shonga: Pirates deserve a trophy

Orlando Pirates forward Justin Shonga is hopeful that the new year brought with it good fortune as he feels the club thoroughly deserves a trophy.

Pirates last won silverware back in May 2014, when they lifted the Nedbank Cup under Vladimir Vermezovic, and the club’s supporters are desperate for the drought to end.

Many of the players themselves hold a similar craving, with one Shonga in particular having yet to taste glory since his arrival at the Soweto outfit back in 2017.

The Zambian international came close to winning a trophy last month but for anxiety getting the better of his teammates as they fell in the penalty shootout to lose out on the Telkom Knockout Cup to Baroka.

However, he is eager to get going again in 2019 and feels the brand of football they are currently putting out on the pitch is worthy of just rewards.

“A big club like Pirates wants to win trophies and wants to play finals and win a lot of cups when the opportunity presents itself,” Shonga tells KickOff.com.

“And since before I joined the team, they were not doing too well [in 2016/17 and 2017/18] and were not even in a cup final – always getting knocked out in the first or second round – or playing in the CAF Champions League.

“So, I think so far so good because this season we’ve done better. With the type of football and philosophy we play, and the game model we are using at our club, I think it deserves a trophy.
