Sociedad close in on top four in LaLiga

Deportivo Alaves boosted their top four hopes with a narrow 1-0 win over Real Sociedad in LaLiga on Friday evening.

Alaves had aspirations of moving closer to the top four, while Sociedad were looking to steer clear of the drop zone in their final league game of the year.

The visitors got off to the perfect start when they broke the deadlock through Jonathan Calleri’s third goal of the season after 11 minutes.

Sociedad did most of the attacking as the first went on, with David Zurutuza and Adnan Januzaj going close with efforts from distance after 26 minutes.

Alaves, meanwhile, were unable to seriously test the Sociedad goalkeeper in the remaining stages of the first half as the hosts were in control for most of the half.

The visitors came out firing in the second half as Ghana star Mubarak Wakaso forced Pacheco into a fine save with an effort from distance in the 55th minute.

Sociedad were left frustrated for most of the stanza as Alaves defended quite deep in their own half while looking to catch their opponents on the break.

The home side threw everything forward in the closing stages as Mikel Oyarzabal and Mikel Merino had headers saved by Pecheco in quick succession.
