Soweto Derby cup hero: Jerry Sikhosana

Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates have met in some memorable knockout competition matches and this weekend’s Telkom Knockout semi-final between the two sides is expected to thrill.

As they prepare to lock horns for the second time in less than a month in the TKO, after their Absa Premiership meeting ended in Pirates’ favour, KickOff.com takes you down memory lane by looking back at cup competition heroes from both sides in the PSL era.

After looking at how Rowen Fernandez helped Amakhosi to the Absa Cup title in 2006, we now focus on a man who was famous for tormenting Chiefs shot-stopper Brian Baloyi, Bucs legend Jerry Sikhosana.

Venue: FNB Stadium

Result: Pirates 4 Chiefs 1

Jerry Sikhosana lit up the Soweto Derby in 1996, while goalkeeper Brian Baloyi had an afternoon to forget. Sikhosana bagged a hat-trick within 47 minutes of the match as Pirates cruised to a 4-1 victory in the semi-finals. It was the first hat-trick anyone had scored in a Soweto Derby for 15 years.

He scored his first in the 18th minute and made it two just before the break. It was only two minutes into the second period when he completed his hat-trick.

To this day, many people still talk about how “Legs of Thunder” tormented “Spiderman” that afternoon.
