Spurs clinch first-leg EFL Cup win

Tottenham Hotspur saw off London rivals Chelsea 1-0 in an EFL Cup semi-final first leg tie at Wembley on Tuesday evening.

It was an evenly-matched start to the contest, with both sides getting in a shot on goal inside the opening 10 minutes.

The game burst in to life in the 26th minute when Harry Kane was awarded a penalty after being fouled by Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga. The Spurs skipper kept his composure from the spot.

Chelsea were seeing plenty of the ball in wide areas, but with a lack of target man in the middle they were a little too predictable with their possession.

Spurs were far more willing to go direct than their opponents and although Chelsea edged possession they were not getting very far when they got on the ball in the final third of the field.

It was an eventful end to the first half as Chelsea hit the post twice; first through N’ Golo Kante and then via Callum Hudson-Odoi’s cross. But despite Chelsea coming strongly back in to the half in the final 15 minutes, it would remain 1-0 to the hosts as the sides headed in to the interval.

Although Tottenham were second best for the beginning of the second half, they so nearly doubled their lead through star man Kane. The striker’s shot from range was brilliantly struck, forcing Kepa to produce a full-stretch save to his right.

Soon afterwards, Chelsea should really have been on level terms. Ross Barkley flicked on the corner and Andreas Christensen was there to meet the ball towards the back post, only to shank his first-time effort wide of the target.

The rest of the match saw Chelsea camped inside the Spurs half but unable to break the hosts’ defence down with plenty to play for going in to the second leg at Stamford Bridge.
