This team can't be relegated – Tinkler

Maritzburg United coach Eric Tinkler emphasised the importance of fighting until the end after their 2-1 win over AmaZulu on Friday night.

Judas Moseamedi scored in stoppage time against Usuthu to send the fans into raptures at Harry Gwala Stadium, and the win certainly lifted the spirits of the players and supporters.

Tinkler believes relegation for the club would be a loss to the Absa Premiership as a whole as they are the hope of the KwaZulu-Natal midlands.

“This team can’t be relegated, we don’t deserve to go to the National First Division, we are a very professional club and only a few teams are managed like us,” Tinkler said.

With eight games left, Maritzburg United are three points behind Free State Stars and Chippa United. Tinkler wants his team to avoid the playoffs and to achieve that he demands double work from his players.

“We don’t want to be in the playoffs and for us to achieve that we need to work extra hard and win all our home games. We must prepare to win against the top teams as we want to avoid the playoffs,” he explained.

The Team of Choice’s mentality will be tested as they travel to Gatueng to face Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday before host Mamelodi Sundowns next Tuesday. They then play Bloemfontein Celtic away.

“We needed this win for mental strength for our next three tough games,” Tinkler added. “After losing to Cape Town City, we had to get these maximum points.”
