United run riot to end year on high

Manchester United’s resurgence under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continued in an emphatic 4-1 win over Bournemouth at home to conclude the year’s action in the English Premier League.

United aimed to cap their final encounter of the year in style, and made the dream start after Paul Pogba stretched out his left leg to tuck in Marcus Rashford’s cross inside five minutes.

Manchester were in charge from then on, leaving the visitors to play a chasing game by sitting deep and playing through a counterattacking approach.

Having found the opener, Pogba looked to return the favour with a nod from the edge of the penalty area to Rashford who took the opportunity with a right-foot shot which Nathan Ake deflected away.

Soon after, Pogba ran into the box to head home Ander Herrerra’s cross on 33 minutes to inevitably complete his brace.

The visitors had to wait 37 minutes to get their first sight on goal as Josh King fired goalwards from an acute angle, forcing David De Gea to punch clear at the near post.

On the cusp of halftime, the Red Devils grabbed a third after Anthony Martial’s outside pass led to Rashford stretching himself to squeeze the ball past an advancing Asmir Begovic.

A short corner at the other end allowed Ake to get in at the near post to head past De Gea to end off a pulsating half.

Early in the second half, Herrera saw his strike from outside the box cleared over the Cherries crossbar as United looked for a fourth.
